HREA offers e-learning course parallel to session of Commission on Human Rights

For immediate release
20 April 2005

HREA offered a distance learning course on the United Nations human rights parallel to the 61st session of the UN Commission on Human Rights, the world human rights body. By making extensive use of the Commissionís website course participants were able to learn about the UNís human rights activities as they presented themselves to the world: in real-time, with immediate access to the original material, live and uncut, and with all the dramatic twists and turns a session of the Commission offers. The course exposed students to the real world of human rights in the making and offered them a glimpse into the world of human rights diplomacy on the highest possible level.

This includes periodic country visits during which he meets policy makers, visits to education facilities and subsequently makes recommendations to governments to guarantee the right to education for all. "Many countries want to do the right thing, but they can't get past the conceptual. It's like they don't have a hook to hang their hat on," said Mr. Villalobos about his mandate.

Through its Distance Learning Programme HREA annually offers eight e-learning courses. 23 courses have been offered since February 2002 in which nearly 700 human rights defenders participated.
