HREA joins new European network

Amsterdam, 1 July 2003 -- HREA joined the new network for "Democracy and Human Rights Education in Europe" (DARE), which was established in Antwerp on 28 June. DARE is a Europe-wide network of NGO's and other organisations devoted to promoting a deeper understanding and commitment to human rights and democracy through education within the enlarged European Union and beyond. The network currently consists of 37 members from 23 countries in Europe.

As a Europe-wide network focusing on the twin fields of human rights education (HRE) and education for democratic citizenship (EDC), DARE intends to create a new environment in which such organisations can thrive, benefiting from common services and a pooling of experience and expertise, which (as the network develops) will create a common purpose and focus for HRE/EDC.

During a General Assembly the members of the network elected a Board and approved a workplan for the period 2003-2004. HREA's Deputy Director Frank Elbers was elected to the Board of DARE. As part of the network's activities, in December 2004 HREA will be organising an international conference on the impact of the UN Decade for Human Rights Education. HREA will also develop and maintain the DARE website.
