First DARE Spring Academy a success

Participants of the DARE Spring AcademyAmsterdam, 15 April 2009 -- From April 2-9, 29 young educators met in the German Harz Mountains for the first DARE Spring Academy. The participants came from nine European countries resembling various fields of work and interest, all related to Youth Work, some being teachers, some social workers but also a few students and volunteers active in NGOs working with children and youth. Aim was to broaden their knowledge and human rights and methodology, and to develop skills in human rights education with young people.

During the Spring Academy a great variety of aspects and methods concerning human rights education were presented. Participants for example would draw and act out the 30 articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, or – later during the course – take on different roles in a complex simulation game, showing the difficulties of pursuing human rights when it comes to international conflicts. In addition to the units and workshops at International House Sonnenberg, the whole group also spent a day in the University of Göttingen, meeting representatives of six different NGOs such as Amnesty International and the Society of Threatened Peoples. Thus the multipliers had a chance to learn first hand about social projects of active organisations linked to the field of human rights.

Participants of the DARE Spring AcademyThe first DARE Spring Academy was organised by International House Sonnenberg in collaboration with HREA and other members of the Democracy and Human Rights Education in Europe (DARE) Network. Everyone involved was very excited about the Spring Academy and the opportunity to gain new perspectives, methods and ideas linked to the topic.

DARE is a Europe-wide network of NGOs and other organisations devoted to raise the profile of Education for Democratic Citizenship (EDC) and Human Rights Education (HRE), promote transcultural and transnational cooperation, and enhance the quality of education within these fields. DARE aims at achieving recognition, visibilitity and adequate resources for EDC and HRE as a core obligation for the formal and non-formal education systems throughout Europe.
