HREA obtains consultative status with UN Economic and Social Council

New York, 27 January 2009 -- On Tuesday, 27 January HREA was approved for special consultative status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations (UN). This status is granted to non-governmental organizations that have special competence in a few of the fields of activity covered by the ECOSOC. HREA will be able to make a contribution to the work programmes and goals of the UN by serving as technical experts, advisers and consultants.

HREA's consultative status will enable it to submit written statements and make oral presentations during UN meetings. HREA anticipates doing so on behalf of the hundreds of grassroots organisations and individuals who are part of HREA's extended human rights education network.

ECOSOC makes recommendations to the UN General Assembly on human rights issues. It reviews the reports submitted by the Human Rights Council and submits the amended versions to the General Assembly. Additionally, it oversees several committees and commissions, such as the Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights, the Commission on the Status of Women and the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, as well as UN specialized agencies, such as the International Labor Organization (ILO) and the World Health Organization (WHO).
